False Alarm

False Alarm

The Groundhog looked fer ‘is shadow today
And grumbled near to death
“World’s goin’ to pot,” ‘ee said,

“I shud-a staid in bed.”
‘Ole rabbit laughed as” ‘ee bounded free
Bouncing is long, soft ears;
“Run, granny-hog, run,”‘ee said,
“An’ yer bones’ll pop in glee.
Yes, sir, it’s time to be up and about,
Up from a cold winter’s tease.”
But groundhog snorted in rude disdain
As he lumbered about on ‘is ‘nees,
“See thar” he shouted, a-pointin’
A-pointin’ to the sky,
“I know’d it true! Sun’s aw-reddy gone
An thar’s nothin’ here to see!
“Um a-going, to bed, ‘uh am indeed,
Just whar a critter shud orter be.”
So ‘ee put up is sign that red
Do Not Disturb
An-ee made a flyin leap, don’cha see
And wuz a-sleep a-for-ee hit the bed
Why-ee din’t een hear a squeak
But it were no matter, fer it wuz a-holding
You might even say they’re both asleep
Except for granny-hog’s snores, a-fightin
To scare away the shadows since
Says she done scared um a way off far
An now they’re hidin’ in bac’ of Mars.
