Marie and Chief Quanah Parker

Marie and Chief Quanah Parker.

A Brave Man
A Brave Man

I was born in the small town of Quanah, TX which was named in honor of Chief Quanah. Quanah was the son of Comanche Chief Peta Nocono and Quanah turned out to be the last of the Comanche Chiefs. He never lost a battle to the white man and was never captured by the army, but decided to surrender and lead his tribe into the white man’s culture when he realized  there was no alternative. His people were the last of the Staked Plains to come into the reservation system. He was married to a white woman named Cynthia who spent 24 years with the Comanche people.

I see this as a beautiful example of humility and wisdom on the part of Chief Quanah. “In the span of a single lifetime Quanah passed from a Stone Age warrior to a statesman in the Age of the Industrial Revolution, as he accepted the challenge and responsibility of leading the whole Comanche tribe on the difficult road toward their new existence,” Bill Neeley, Biographer. There are many of us who could to choose his guidance in this troubled world.

Nice thoughts, Miss Marie. I (Lisa) am from Nocona, Tx and share your admiration.

    1. Thanks for your comments. I grew up knowing about Quanah Parker and always admired his ability to put his tribe first.

    2. Thank you so much for letting me know about your connection. Did you ever live in Quanah? I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Did you see my post ‘Purity’
